A Little too Close for Comfort

As everyone knows by now, there was great victory for the pro gun community in the Supreme Court's decision in the DC vs. Heller case. Although it was a victory I am still a little disturbed by how close the vote was. 5 to 4, a little scary. I can understand that there are liberal people and conservative people in the Supreme Court that are expected to vote a certain way, and this country for some reason has decided to accept that. The last time I checked, the Supreme Court was supposed to interpret the laws, not make them! After reading much of the document published after the decision, it seems to be pretty logical that there is nothing in the 2nd amendment that would allow for the restriction of the right to keep and bear arms. It does not say that you are only allowed to keep or bear arms only when part of a militia, as the DC lawyers were trying to argue. They used strange things like dictionaries and other examples of things written in that time with the same phrasing where the intention was clear to come to this amazing conclusion. Despite these facts the vote was still 5 to 4. To me this demonstrates an extreme lack of logic and a push for personal agenda in the interpretation of the Constitution. Once it is demonstrated that the language clearly gives individuals the right to keep and bear arms, how can almost half the interpreters of that law then say that is not the case? That is just a blatant attempt to change the Constitution without having to go through all that trouble of you know, changing the Constitution.

One of the dissenting justices actually said the following:

"In my view, there simply is no untouchable constitutional right guaranteed by the Second Amendment to keep loaded handguns in the house in crime-ridden urban areas."

That is funny I thought the whole purpose of constitutional rights was that they were in fact untouchable, at least not without a lot of red tape.

Also, I don't know about anyone else, but if I lived in a crime-ridden urban area, that would be the first place where I would want to have a gun for self defense. It is quite obvious that the state cannot protect me from crime in that area (or any area for that matter), so I should be able to provide for my own defense.

Guns Don't Kill People, Knives Do

In Japan a young man decided it would be a good idea to just start stabbing people in the street. Apparently you don't have to have access to guns in order to kill a bunch of people. In fact according to the article mass stabbings are starting to become more popular in Japan. There are very heavy restrictions on guns in Japan and amazingly enough, they are still able to kill each other.

I have always been confused by the idea that limiting everyone's access to weapons will make crazy people not want to kill people. Japan is now considering limiting the size of the blade a person can carry.

"Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura told reporters Monday the government was considering tightening restrictions on large-bladed survival knives like the one apparently used in the attack, which had a 13-centimeter blade and is easily available in stores."

I do not get this concept. If a person is willing to go out and kill lots of random people, which by the way is already illegal, why would they be deterred by the weapon of choice also being illegal? Do crazy people actually sit there and think to themselves, "Gee, I really want to stab a bunch of people, but knives of the appropriate size are illegal, whatever shall I do?"

Vote for Ahab

I'm pretty sure most people that have made it to my blog have already voted, but vote for Call me Ahab, so he can go shoot lots of fun guns!

Holy Crap Meow

This weekend I was viciously attacked by mosquitoes, so I found this article to be rather interesting. Apparently catnip is ten time more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET. Being as though DEET is some really nasty stuff, this is probably good news. I really only see one draw back. Can you imagine coming inside to your cute and cuddly cats after having rubbed yourself in catnip oil? I see what my cats do to a small defenseless fake mouse that has a little bit of catnip dust in it. What are they going to do to me when I walk in the house with concentrated catnip oil rubbed all over me? I am thinking maybe the mosiquitoes are less dangerous.

Clap clap, thumbs up.......

clap, clap, thumbs up...clap clap, arms up, clap clap, thumbs up, clap clap, thumbs up.....wait no, I meant arms up..............noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

So, is everyone supposed to do this all together, that will just be creepy. Although I think I might be even stranger to watch everyone doing the same thing at random intervals. It's like the creepy audience in sports video games. Everyone is programmed to do the same actions at random times.

Yellow Means Stop?

Indiana has been experiencing a considerable amount of nasty weather as of late. As a result many of the traffic lights are not functioning properly. Instead of a very clear and thoughtless state of green, yellow or red they are instead flashing yellow or red. Apparently this sudden change in driving conditions is just too much for people to comprehend. Now, I very distinctly remember a day in drivers ed where we covered what a flashing yellow light means, what a flashing red light means, and what you are supposed to do in the event that you approach one. This day of drivers ed seems to have been lost on the majority of Hoosiers. It appears as though flashing yellow now means stop, not approach with caution, not maybe slow down a little, no, stop. In the event of the flashing yellow you now stop, hold up traffic, confuse the people going in the other direction and generally just act like a complete moron. I suppose there is the possibility that these people are just being nice and letting the other people go. Unfortunately being nice will usually just piss everyone else off and lead to an accident, because no one expects you to be nice. We expect you to follow the rules of the road!
